What is all of this?
If you hiave stumbled across this website without meaning to, then hello! Welcome! I'm sure all of this is mostly gibberish to you.
This website is a colleciton of websites and other resources about being nonhuman.
You may know us better as otherkin or therians, but there are countless other subgroups outside of those two.
The definition for what it means to be nonhuman changes depending on who you ask. Broadly, I define it as an internal sense of self (be it in part or in whole) that is distinctly not human.
Nonhumanity is subgroup of alterhumanity, which is a label that defines individuals who have had any number of experiences in life that they feel alienates them from the general perception of having a "normal human experience".
What a "normal human experience" is can be a bit hard to define, as it depends entierly on the individual. Sometimes alterhumanity can look like someone being plural (you may know this as having DID, or dissociative identity disorder, although that is not the only way to be plural), someone having certain spiritual beliefs, or sometimes someone having such an affinity for nature that they feel disconnected from human society. The reasons behind alterhumanity are endless.
The difference between nonhumanity and alterhumanity is that alterhumans may still feel 100% human. Nonhumans may see themselves as human or feel like a human sometimes, but they also experience feeling distinctly not human. Moments in which feelings of nonhumanity are heightened are called shifts.
The nonhuman community is old. We are not new. We were one of the first communities to emerge online, way back in 1970. Over the years, our community has changed and grown. It can be isolating, it can be hard to talk about these feelings with people. Sharing our stories and lives is a huge part of our community. It's how we connect with others like us and keep from feeling alone. We write, make art, make anything we can to communicate our experiences.
This website focuses mainly on nonhumanity. There will be resources on other parts of alterhumanity as well, just because of how broad the overlap is, but the focus is primarily on nonhuman identity.
If you would like to learn more, I reccomend checking out the Required Reading page. I have listed websites and documents that are great entry points for anyone newer to the community.
Thanks for checking my website out!
